Cultana Training Area Expansion Project - Public Environment Report released

In December 2009, Defence formally referred the Cultana Training Area Expansion Project to the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (DSEWPaC) under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC). In February 2010, DSEWPaC determined the Project would be assessed by a Public Environment Report (PER). Defence engaged AECOM Australia Pty Ltd (AECOM) to prepare a PER for the Cultana Training Area Expansion.

The PER is a key component of environmental planning for the Cultana Training Area Expansion. The PER provides a means of communicating the scope, location, receiving environment and potential impacts of the activities associated with the Project, and the associated environment mitigation controls that Defence proposes to implement.

Public review

The objective of the PER is to enable stakeholders, regulators and the general public to understand the environmental consequences associated with the Cultana Training Area Expansion. Defence is therefore committed to ensuring the community and relevant stakeholders have an informed understanding of the PER and the opportunity to raise any questions, concerns and considerations.

The person intending to take the action, Defence’s Projector Director Strategic Acquisitions, welcomes comment on the proposed expansion and encourages people to read the draft PER and make a submission. The feedback received will be considered and addressed in the final PER where relevant. AECOM will also assist Defence by developing and managing the public review and submission process of the PER.

All submissions must be received by 5pm CST on 07 December 2011. Submissions can be lodged by post, fax or email.

Advertisements promoting the PER and public review process have been placed in local, regional and national newspapers in accordance with section 98 of the EPBC Act.

A copy of the draft PER is available to download at www.defence.gov.au/id/cultana or by contacting the project team at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
